MOURNING THE ANCIENT "Mourning The Ancient" (Self-produced)
For those who ignore it, Mourning The Ancient are not just a band, but some
sort of a life philosophy that features Molly and Mike as minds of the
project. Through their official website (www.mourningtheancient.com) they
distribute their creations, some photo CD's with very strong images, this
first film by them, and their first album. But let' talk about this movie:
it's not easy for me to give a response about such a product, because what's
inside is very particular and, honestly, I wasn't expecting such a thing.
It's just scenes, with different sets, which mainline is death and suicide.
Everything is done slow, obsessive on purpose, so that the images are able
to hit the watcher as much as possible. The surrounding music (composed even
by Peter K. from Abigor, Necros from the Italians Theatres Des Vampires and
Mikael from Thy Primordial) is the ideal soundtrack for such a product; it's
slow, obsessive and oppressive, able to increase the images effect. I must
admit that some scenes are very strong, some even exaggerated and bad tasty
(for example, the one with the sacrificed dolls, that stand for children...
I mean, it's understandable that it is all fake, but don't you think it's too
much? I did not appreciate too much the concept...), alternated to other
very goth images and some nudes (in a scene there's an overview of the photo
CD). This product is addressed to those who have chosen the obscure side of
life as their life reason, but I must remind you of two things: 1) the Vhs
format is NTSC (so check out if your VHS recorder supports it) and 2) the
spoken parts are all in English. It's up to you!

Per chi non lo sapesse, Mourning The Ancient non è solo un gruppo musicale, ma una specie di filosofia di vita che vede in Molly e Mike le proprie due menti. Attraverso il loro sito ufficiale (www.mourningtheancient.com) distribuiscono le loro creazioni, ossia dei photo CD contenenti immagini molto forti, questo loro primo film, e il loro primo disco. Ma soffermiamoci a questo filmato: non è facile per me dare un giudizio su un prodotto del genere, in quanto il contenuto è davvero particolare e, onestamente, non mi aspettavo un filmato così. Si tratta di scenette a se stanti, con ambientazioni molto differenti, che hanno come unico filo conduttore la morte e il suicidio. Tutto è volutamente lento, ossessivo, in modo tale che le immagini che si hanno sullo schermo possano colpire al massimo chi guarda. La musica che accompagna le immagini (composta, fra gli altri, da Peter K. degli Abigor, Necros dei nostrani Theatres Des Vampires e Mikael dei Thy Primordial) è l'ideale colonna sonora per un prodotto del genere, anch'essa lenta, ossessiva e oppressiva, in grado di potenziare (e di non poco) l'effetto delle immagini. Ammetto che certe scene sono davvero forti, qualcuna di cattivo gusto (ho trovato veramente squallide certe immagini dove dei bambolotti vengono sacrificati come fossero bambini... anche se si capisce benissimo che sono solo bambolotti, il concetto non mi è piaciuto più di tanto...), alternate ad immagini motlo goth ed altre di nudo (in una scena viene fatta una carrellata di immagini che si possono trovare sui photo cd). Questo prodotto si indirizza sicuramente a persone che hanno fatto del lato oscuro della vita la loro propria ragione di esistenza, ma vi ricordo due cose: 1)il formato della vhs è NTSC (quindi controllate che il vostro videoregistratore supporti questo formato prima di spendere soldi) e 2)le parti narrate sono tutte in inglese. A voi la scelta.
