[Note: I recently stumbled across this little-known gem of a film from 1973. It was made in Japan by a group of pioneering artists who cared nothing for convention, shocked audiences, societal norms or widespread success, for that matter. Belladonna of Sadness is so totally bizarre that only a small number of people would appreciate it. The subject matter is very taboo for 1973! The wide variety of animation techniques and styles is breathtaking! It is an incredible experience to watch this masterpiece of oddity and beauty. It has such style and uniqueness that any fan of anime would love it. The music score is astonishingly great and wonderful. I can't sing its praises enough.
